“Hope deferred makes the heart sick,Proverbs 13:12 New Living Translation
but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.”
So, you have a dream. You have lofty aspirations, but you don’t know how to go about them. As a result, your dreams remain nothing more than mere wishes. What you need to do is break down your dreams into smaller actions that you can actually do and then, little by little, you will see your dreams come true. This post is all about turning your dreams into reality by creating plans, setting goals, and taking action.
First, write down your dreams. These are your high-level, head stuck in the cloud mentalities, aspirations of what you want to do, be, or accomplish. Often, dreams take a long time to achieve. Consider it in some instances to be your mission or purpose in life.
Take me for example. I dream to be an entertainer and influencer. I dream to entertain thousands on Twitch. I dream to influence the gaming industry. I also dream to influence other fields, like Mustangs, metal, Batman, and more. Sometimes, dreams need focusing. In this case, I am focusing my dreams on entertaining in and influencing the gaming industry. Last, I dream of leading an online community, one focused on the gaming industry but open to other areas of interest.
Before I move on to the next step, I should take inventory of the tools I will need to bring my dreams through to reality. To start, I will need Twitch. I will also need a social platform, so that’s where YouTube will come in. Because I want to build a community, I am also going to need Discord. Last, I will need this website as it ties everything together in a central hub about who I am and what I do.
Next, write down your plans. These are your, still high-level, ideas for implementing your dreams. For example, I have four plans. First, I plan to build a Twitch following, which is where I plan to connect in real time with people in the community I dream to build. Second, I plan to build a YouTube channel, which is where I plan to grow the community. Third, I plan to bring the community into Discord where members of the community can connect with each other. And, fourth, I plan to build my website here to tie all of these things together but also allow the community to connect with me and who I am.
The third step is to narrow down the high-level plans into more narrow goals. These goals should be attainable, objective, actionable, and perhaps even time-bound. In my case, because Twitch is driven by popularity, I will need to become an affiliate. My goal here is to become a Twitch Affiliate by Summer 2021. On YouTube, I want to be able to get a custom URL for my channel, but I need to meet the required metrics. As such, my goal is to obtain 50 subscribers to get me started by Spring 2021. For Discord, I want to bring my Twitch and website followers and YouTube subscribers to my channel. My goal is to bring over as many of my community into that channel (This goal is less specific and definitely not time-bound; it is not a very good goal.). My goal on this website is to achieve 100 followers within 1 year.
The final step is to create specific action items that will help achieve your goals, bring your plans to fruition, and thus fulfill your dreams. Here are some of my action items:
- Create 10 how-to YouTube videos on relevant gaming topics
- Create 1 substantive blog post per week
- Create 1 daily post on blog
- Stream 3 days per week for 8 hours or more total on Twitch
There you have it. If you want to turn your dreams into reality, you need to create plans, goals, and actions. Stop dreaming. Start acting. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish when you think through strategically and figure out what you need to do to fulfill your dreams.
